Round 3 Formula Drift Palm Beach Team Report
Rhys Millen Racing - Huntington Beach, CA - June 7, 2011
After a successful test the week prior with a new front suspension design and improved engine calibration, the RMR team was optimistic heading into the Formula Drift event at Palm Beach International Raceway. This optimism was realized from the first practice as Rhys quickly acclimated to the flat and simple circuit. In qualifying, Rhys achieved a score of 90.0 points out of 100, good for 5th overall and 3 points behind the top qualifier. For his second qualifying pass, Rhys scored a near-perfect 29 points for driving line and achieved the highest entry speed of the session at 92.8 mph.
During the top-32 elimination, Rhys made quick work of his opponent, scoring a unanimous win. Rhys was finally eliminated in the top-8 round, ultimately finishing 5th overall. Among the top-5 finishers, the RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe was the only truly production-based race car - powered by a modified version of the Hyundai V6 found in the showroom version of the Genesis Coupe. The turbocharged V6 engine provided the power needed to close the gap with even the most powerful purpose-built V8-powered cars.
Rhys returns behind the wheel of the Hyundai Veloster at the Global RallyCross: Last Chance event at Pikes Peak International Raceway on June 17-18. The following weekend, he will pilot the Hyundai PM580 at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for the second consecutive year attempting to break the 10-minute barrier. Pikes Peak legend Rod Millen takes over in the Genesis Coupe competing in the 2WD Time Attack Division, where he will attempt to break the division record of 11:31.
A special thanks to Napleton Hyundai West Palm Beach for their support and service.
